“Approach the New Year with resolve to find the opportunities hidden in each new day.” | Michael Josephson |
Have you done your year-end review yet? Did you meet your health, wealth and relationship goals this year? This is the time of year when people are hemming and hawing about what they didn’t get to this year and how they’d like to start anew. For many, it’s those old, unhealthy habits they’d like to leave behind and turn over a new leaf. Studies show that 55% of resolutions are health related.
The question you probably ask yourself is if these goals are so important, why aren’t they already a part of my daily ritual? By the end of the year, you may feel so defeated. Sadly, many people pile on so much shame and guilt around this time of year. One client said that the amount of shame and guilt she felt was like a scene at the circus where the clowns were cramming and piling into the little Yugo car. Her shame and guilt felt so heavy and she felt overwhelmed.
Each year, millions of people declare they’re ready for a transformation. In a previous blog, I listed the 6 human needs. These are great to know, because they’re what drive our decisions and behaviors. They are:
Our life choices are formed around getting our needs met and that we’re meeting them in a healthy way. I’ve also noticed that timing can play a huge role in how we create positive, lasting changes in our days, weeks, months and years. Here’s where timing comes in relating to your resolutions.
All of us are deeply connected to seasonal cycles/cycles of change, whether we consciously are aware of it or not. They are:
- New Beginnings/Birth/Creation
- Dropping Off
- Back to New Beginnings
You can see how the cycles of change match the cycles of nature -Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. You’ll find these rhythms in a day, week, month and year. When you learn how to drop into the natural rhythms around you, profound changes begin to happen in your life. If can feel like going with the flow of a beautiful river.
I’m proposing that there can be a better time to create changes in your life. If you’re staying connected to the natural rhythms of the planet, it may be no suprise to you then that Spring is the best time for new beginnings. Now, the caveat is that if you’re really motivated, by all means, get started. However, if you want to feel like your moving with the current of the river, then Spring is a great time to plan for new, exciting changes.
The New Year comes in the middle of winter. This is the time of year to be introspective. Decisions and changes can be made, however they tend to be more passive and gentle. Think about the animals and how they hibernate during the winter. This is the energy at this time of year. Again, if you’re feeling movtivated, then get going. However, I wanted to provide you with a different perspective as you contemplate 2020.
Timing is everything!
